How to choose your first katana: a complete guide to steel, blade geometry and tsuka construction

Choosing a first katana may initially appear to be a simple matter of selecting an attractive design, a preferred steel or a distinctive hamon. Once buyers begin researching the subject, however, they often discover that the decision is far more complex.

Steel, heat treatment, blade geometry, bo-hi, weight, balance, tsuka construction, tsuba, polishing and intended use can all significantly affect how a katana performs, how it feels in the hands and whether it is genuinely suitable for its owner.

While preparing this guide, we reviewed many of the questions and discussions raised by collectors and practitioners on Reddit, the SBG Sword Forum and other sword enthusiast communities. We noticed that a particularly large number of detailed questions came from katana enthusiasts in the United States. These questions often concerned spring steel versus T10, through-hardening versus clay tempering, whether a first katana should have bo-hi, how to assess tsuka quality, whether two mekugi are better than one, and what the term “battle-ready katana” actually means.

Start by deciding why you want a katana

Before comparing steels or selecting fittings, determine how the katana will primarily be used.

A sword designed for collecting and display may not be ideal for frequent training. A lightweight sword suited to iaido-style practice may not be the best choice for cutting resistant targets.

The correct first katana is usually the one that most closely matches its intended purpose.

Collecting and display

For a katana intended mainly for collecting, indoor display or appreciation of traditional Japanese sword aesthetics, buyers may prioritise:

  • a genuine hamon;

  • visible hada or forging patterns;

  • Sashikomi or Hadori polishing;

  • a coherent koshirae theme;

  • well-matched tsuba, fuchi-kashira, menuki and saya;

  • traditional construction or specialist craftsmanship.

A display-oriented or collector-focused katana does not necessarily require the greatest possible impact resistance. Clay-tempered T10, folded steel and composite constructions can offer more visually complex hamon and hada.

Iaido and regular training

A katana or iaito intended for training should be selected according to:

  • blade weight;

  • point of balance;

  • tsuka length;

  • blade length;

  • bo-hi design;

  • grip comfort;

  • fatigue during extended practice.

For practitioners who have not received training with a live blade, an unsharpened iaito is usually the more appropriate starting point. A lightweight alloy blade can reduce training risk and is better suited to repeated drawing, sheathing and kata practice.

Why sharpness, hardness and toughness involve trade-offs

First-time buyers often ask for a blade that is extremely sharp, highly impact-resistant, capable of retaining its edge indefinitely and impossible to bend or chip.

These qualities cannot all be increased without limit.

Higher hardness generally improves edge retention and resistance to wear, but excessive hardness may reduce impact toughness and make the edge more vulnerable to chipping during a poor cut.

Greater toughness helps a blade withstand impact and minor misalignment, but insufficient hardness may result in edge rolling, faster wear or permanent deformation.

What does “battle-ready katana” mean?

“Battle-ready katana” is a widely used term in the English-language sword market, but it is not a formal manufacturing standard or recognised quality certification.

The term is commonly used to describe a sword with:

  • a carbon-steel blade;

  • a sharpened edge;

  • a full-length nakago;

  • mountings intended for some degree of functional use.

However, the phrase alone does not confirm:

  • professional heat treatment;

  • suitable blade geometry;

  • a precisely fitted tsuka core;

  • secure tsukamaki;

  • correct mekugi installation;

  • proper saya fit;

  • suitability for tameshigiri.

Buyers should examine the actual construction and specifications rather than relying on a marketing label.

Which steel is best for a first functional katana?

There is no single steel that is universally best. Steel must be considered together with heat treatment, hardness, blade geometry and intended use.

9260 spring steel: toughness and reliability

For a first katana intended primarily for practical use, durability and structural reliability, 9260 spring steel is an excellent option.

When properly heat-treated, 9260 can provide a strong balance between usable hardness and high toughness. Compared with some harder differentially hardened blades, it is generally more tolerant of minor cutting errors and lateral stress.

High-specification 9260 blades may also receive controlled vacuum heat treatment. A controlled vacuum environment can allow more precise temperature management while reducing surface oxidation and decarburisation.

With a Premium Mirror Polish, a 9260 blade can display a bright, clean finish while retaining clearly defined shinogi, yokote and kissaki geometry.

A 9260 katana is especially suitable for buyers who prioritise:

  • toughness;

  • impact resistance;

  • long-term reliability;

  • functional cutting;

  • a more forgiving blade;

  • performance rather than a natural hamon.

T10 high-carbon steel: genuine hamon and traditional appearance

T10 high-carbon steel is commonly used for clay-tempered katana.

By controlling the cooling rate across different areas of the blade, the maker can produce a genuine hamon and different properties between the edge and the spine.

T10 is especially attractive to buyers who value:

  • genuine clay tempering;

1095, 65Mn, 5160 and other steels

65Mn and 5160 are widely used spring steels that can provide good toughness and practical performance for training and functional swords.

Regardless of the steel, buyers should ask:

  • What heat-treatment process is used?

  • Is the blade through-hardened or differentially hardened?

  • What is the target hardness?

  • How is the blade cross-section designed?

  • Does the edge retain appropriate niku?

  • Who performs the heat treatment?

  • Is the process properly controlled and repeatable?

The steel name is only the starting point. It is not a guarantee of final performance.

Should a first katana have bo-hi?

Bo-hi is a groove formed along the blade. It changes the sword’s weight, balance, stiffness and handling feedback.

Advantages of bo-hi

A bo-hi can:

  • reduce blade weight;

  • move the point of balance closer to the tsuka;

  • make the sword feel quicker in motion;

  • produce tachikaze when edge alignment is correct;

  • help practitioners assess hasuji.

A katana with bo-hi may be well suited to iaido-style practice, kata and users who prefer a lighter and more responsive sword.

Advantages of no bo-hi

With the same steel, heat treatment and basic dimensions, a blade without bo-hi retains more material and will generally have greater overall stiffness.

A no-hi blade is often the more conservative choice when the main priorities are:

  • durability;

  • stability;

  • cutting more resistant suitable targets;

  • a more substantial handling feel;

  • reducing structural compromise during poor alignment.

This does not mean that every blade with bo-hi is weak or that every no-hi blade is strong. Groove depth, location, termination, blade thickness, shinogi height and heat treatment all affect the final result.

For a first katana focused primarily on functional durability, however, a no-hi blade is often the safer recommendation.

Is a thicker blade always better?

Blade thickness is only one part of blade geometry.

Performance is also influenced by:

  • blade width;

  • kasane;

  • motohaba and sakihaba;

  • shinogi height;

  • cross-sectional geometry;

  • edge angle;

  • niku;

  • kissaki structure;

  • point of balance;

  • heat treatment.

An excessively thick blade may feel stable, but it can also become unnecessarily heavy and create greater resistance during a cut.

An excessively thin blade may enter softer targets more easily, but it will normally require more accurate hasuji and may be less tolerant of poor technique.

For a first katana, a balanced shinogi-zukuri geometry is generally more suitable than an extremely thin or unusually heavy blade.

Why is niku important?

Niku refers to the convex material retained behind the cutting edge.

Appropriate niku supports the edge and can improve the blade’s ability to withstand resistance and minor impact. It is particularly useful for cutting bamboo, thicker tatami rolls and other appropriate targets that offer greater resistance.

A very thin edge with little niku may pass through soft targets more easily, but it usually offers less tolerance for poor alignment.

A functional first katana should therefore not be selected only for razor-like thinness. A properly supported edge is often more useful than an extremely delicate one.

Why tsuka quality matters more than many buyers realise

Many first-time buyers spend considerable time studying blade steel while overlooking the tsuka.

The tsuka is the primary connection between the user and the blade. Even an excellent blade cannot provide safe and reliable performance if the tsuka core is loose, the mekugi are poorly installed, the wrapping moves or the fittings are inaccurately assembled.

Fitting the tsuka core to the nakago

A high-quality wooden tsuka core should be made and adjusted to fit the individual nakago.

The core should not depend on large quantities of adhesive to fill internal gaps. Once installed, the nakago and tsuka core should maintain stable and close contact.

During normal handling, there should be no:

  • internal knocking;

  • blade movement inside the tsuka;

  • looseness near the fuchi;

  • visible deformation of the core;

  • excessive dependence on the mekugi alone.

The mekugi are important retaining components, but accurate nakago-to-tsuka fit is the foundation of the structure.

Are two mekugi better than one?

Not necessarily.

A single mekugi is common in traditional Japanese sword construction. Some modern production katana use two mekugi, but two pegs do not automatically indicate higher quality.

The important factors are:

  • precise fit between the nakago and tsuka core;

  • accurate mekugi-ana alignment;

  • suitable mekugi material;

The purpose of samegawa

Samegawa is not merely decorative.

A higher-specification tsuka may use full-wrap genuine samegawa featuring a prominent central node.

This largest and most visually distinctive node is called the Oyatsubu(親粒) and is also commonly known as the Emperor Node in the English-language sword market. With a full samegawa wrap, the tsukamaki craftsman can position the Oyatsubu so that it appears naturally within one of the diamond openings.

“Full-wrap genuine samegawa with a prominent main node” can therefore be expressed more precisely as:

A full wrap provides more complete and continuous support than separate side panels, although it also requires more material, fitting skill and labour.

Which tsukamaki styles does TangGu Sword use?

TangGu Sword primarily uses two traditional tsukamaki styles.

Morohineri-maki(諸捻巻)

In Morohineri-maki, the tsuka-ito is twisted at the crossover points on both sides of the handle.

It is a widely used and structurally stable wrapping style that is well suited to functional katana and provides a dependable grip.

Morotsumami-maki(諸摘巻)

In Morotsumami-maki, the edges of the tsuka-ito are pinched and folded at each crossover.

It creates a more refined and dimensional appearance and requires greater skill in folding accuracy, tension control and alignment.

Regardless of the style, good tsukamaki should provide:

  • tight wrapping;

  • consistent tension;

  • correct crossover direction;

  • naturally aligned diamond openings;

Why hishigami matter

High-quality traditional tsukamaki normally uses folded paper supports called hishigami beneath the crossover points.

Each tsuka is wrapped by a professional tsukamaki craftsman using traditional Japanese methods, including:

How can you assess tsuka quality?

A good tsuka can be summarised in five qualities:

Tight, aligned, even, stable and comfortable.

“Tight” means the tsuka-ito cannot be easily pushed out of position with a finger.

“Aligned” means the diamond openings follow the centre of the handle and the wrapping is not twisted or noticeably displaced.

“Even” means the tension remains reasonably consistent from the fuchi to the kashira.

“Stable” means the menuki, mekugi, wrapping and final knots do not move during normal handling.

“Comfortable” means there are no sharp protrusions, hardened adhesive spots or unusually painful pressure points.

Hand-wrapped diamond openings will not appear as perfectly identical as computer-generated shapes. The curvature of the tsuka and the height of the menuki naturally affect local spacing.

Minor variation is therefore a normal characteristic of traditional handwork.

  • irregularly oversized and undersized diamonds;

The tsuba is both a guard and the visual centre of the koshirae

The tsuba is positioned between the blade and the tsuka. It provides a degree of protection for the hands while also serving as one of the most important visual and artistic elements of the complete koshirae.

Traditional tsuba may be made from iron, shakudō, shibuichi, brass and other metals. Their shape, thickness, openwork, carving, motif and surface treatment can strongly influence both the character and balance of the katana.

When choosing a first katana, buyers should consider more than the decorative motif of the tsuba. Important details include:

  • whether the nakago-ana has been accurately adjusted to the actual nakago;

  • whether the tsuba fits securely between the seppa, fuchi and habaki;

  • whether there is any movement or rattling after assembly;

  • whether the edges have been carefully refined;

  • whether openwork and carving details are cleanly defined;

  • whether the finish complements the rest of the koshirae;

  • whether the weight noticeably changes the sword’s point of balance.

Some inexpensive production tsuba are produced through basic casting and may display:

  • indistinct decorative details;

  • flat or artificial-looking surfaces;

  • an inaccurately sized nakago-ana.

A handcrafted and finely finished iron tsuba will generally have cleaner contours, carefully refined edges and a more natural metal surface.

A fit that is too loose may allow the sword to slide out. A fit that is too tight may make drawing difficult and damage the koiguchi.

A shirasaya is not the same as an aikuchi koshirae

A shirasaya is primarily intended for blade storage.

It normally has no tsuba and may visually resemble an aikuchi-style mounting, but the two have different purposes.

A shirasaya is not a functional koshirae designed for swinging, training or cutting. Attempting to use it for tameshigiri may be extremely dangerous.

A functional katana should have a complete and securely fitted tsuka, tsuba, fuchi, kashira, seppa and other necessary mounting components.

Which polishing style should you choose?

Polishing affects both appearance and the visual definition of the blade geometry.

Premium Mirror Polish

A premium mirror finish is well suited to through-hardened spring-steel blades.

It produces a clean, bright surface and can highlight the shinogi, yokote and kissaki geometry.

For a vacuum heat-treated 9260 katana, Premium Mirror Polish is an appropriate choice for a modern functional blade.

Sashikomi Polish

Sashikomi emphasises the natural appearance of the genuine hamon and hada. It is particularly suitable for traditionally styled clay-tempered blades.

Hadori Polish

Hadori uses polishing to create a more visible pale treatment along the hamon, making the temper line appear more prominent.

A first-time buyer does not necessarily need the most complex or expensive polish. The polishing style should match the steel, heat treatment and intended character of the blade.

How should you choose weight and balance?

A katana is not better simply because it is heavier.
