A Japanese sword is often first admired for its blade.

Collectors study its sugata, curvature, hamon, hada, kissaki and signature. Yet the blade is only one part of the complete artistic and functional object. A traditionally mounted Japanese sword may also incorporate a tsuba, fuchi-kashira, menuki, seppa, tsuka, lacquered saya, kozuka, kogai and numerous smaller components, each shaped by the skills and artistic decisions of specialised craftsmen.

Together, these elements form the koshirae(拵)—the complete mounting of the sword.

Japanese sword fittings were never merely secondary accessories. Museum collections preserve examples made from iron, copper, gold, silver, shakudō, shibuichi and other alloys, decorated through carving, high-relief work, piercing, inlay, overlay, patination and lacquer. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes samurai arms and equipment as achievements in steel, silk and lacquer, while its exhibitions treat sword mountings and fittings as an important field of Japanese art in their own right.

For TangGu, historical reconstruction begins with this understanding:

A sword fitting is not simply a component to be copied. It is a historical work whose construction, materials, artistic language and cultural meaning must first be studied.


A Japanese Sword Is More Than Its Blade

The complete appearance of a mounted Japanese sword is created through the relationship between blade, fittings, handle and scabbard.

The tsuba protects the hand but may also serve as a highly developed field for sculptural and pictorial composition. The fuchi and kashira reinforce and finish the tsuka while contributing to the visual theme of the mounting. Menuki, originally associated with grip construction, became an important form of miniature sculpture placed beneath the tsuka-ito. A kozuka or kogai could add another layer of material, iconography and craftsmanship.

Museum records demonstrate the complexity of these assemblies. A British Museum mounting, for example, combines iron, gold, copper, shakudō and shibuichi across its fittings, using coloured metal inlay, pierced carving, nanako grounds and applied sculptural elements to create different motifs across the tsuba, fuchi-kashira, menuki and kozuka.

The saya could be equally important. Lacquer, rayskin, horn, metal fittings, textile and family crests might be coordinated into a unified composition. Surviving mountings include polished and patinated iron fittings, gold maki-e lacquer, nashiji surfaces and elaborate mon decoration.

A complete koshirae should therefore be understood as a collaborative work. Its final appearance may reflect the work of swordsmiths, polishers, lacquerers, metalworkers, woodworkers and tsukamaki craftsmen.

Historical reconstruction must respect that complexity.


From Functional Equipment to Decorative Art

Japanese sword fittings developed over many centuries, but the relative peace and highly structured society of the Edo period created particularly favourable conditions for the refinement of sword furniture.

For the samurai, the sword remained a symbol of authority, status and identity. The fittings and mountings surrounding the blade offered a visible means of personal expression and became an important focus of artistic production. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has described Edo-period sword fashion as a luxurious field in which fittings became both a critical form of self-expression and a major focus for artists.

Subjects ranged from restrained geometric designs to complex scenes drawn from nature, literature, religion, folklore and military history. Dragons, shishi, peonies, autumn grasses, waves, cranes, insects, Buddhist deities and legendary warriors could all be translated into metal.

Different schools developed recognisable approaches to composition, materials and technique. The Gotō tradition became closely associated with refined soft-metal fittings and courtly subjects. Yokoya artists were known for expressive carving and pictorial compositions. Nara, Mito and Ishiguro craftsmen likewise contributed distinctive approaches to relief, inlay, naturalistic subjects and mixed-metal decoration.

The result was a field in which a component only a few centimetres wide could display remarkable technical and artistic sophistication.


Why Historical Reconstruction Matters

Historical objects survive, but the knowledge required to make them does not preserve itself automatically.

A museum can protect an original fitting from unnecessary handling, unstable humidity, accidental damage or inappropriate restoration. A catalogue can record its dimensions and attribution. High-resolution photography can reveal parts of its surface. None of these things alone, however, fully explains how the object was conceived and made.

The act of reconstruction asks a different set of questions:

  • How was the composition organised around the shape of the fitting?
  • How deep was the original relief?
  • Which details were cast, carved, inlaid or chased?
  • How did the artist control the transition between polished and textured surfaces?
  • How were separate components fitted together?
  • Which colours came from the metal itself, and which were created by patination?
  • How much of the present appearance reflects the original finish, and how much results from age and wear?

These questions transform passive observation into practical investigation.

Reconstruction is therefore not only about producing a finished object. It is a method of learning.


Utsushi: Learning Through the Study of Historical Masterpieces

The study and recreation of earlier masterpieces has a recognised place within Japanese craft tradition.

The Victoria and Albert Museum uses the term utsushi(写し) to describe the copying of historical masterpieces and explains that it has long been regarded in Japan as an important form of training. By working with comparable materials and techniques, a student can develop a deeper understanding of the processes involved in creating the original.

In this context, copying does not necessarily mean producing a deceptive counterfeit or claiming authorship that belongs to an earlier master.

Utsushi can involve:

  • close observation;
  • technical analysis;
  • study of materials;
  • disciplined repetition;
  • interpretation of hidden processes;
  • and the continuation of established artistic knowledge.

The distinction lies in purpose, honesty and presentation.

A historically informed reconstruction should always be identified as a newly made work. It should not carry a false signature, fabricated provenance or misleading claims of age. Its relationship to the historical reference should be clearly explained.

When approached responsibly, reconstruction becomes an act of study and transmission rather than imitation for its own sake.


Historical Reconstruction Is Not Mechanical Duplication

The word “replica” can suggest that an object has been reproduced through direct moulding, scanning or automated duplication.

That is not how every historical reconstruction is created.

In many cases, the original object cannot be physically accessed. The reconstruction may have to be developed from museum records, auction photographs, published measurements, comparable works and partial views. Details hidden beneath fittings or outside the camera angle may not be documented at all.

The reconstruction process therefore requires interpretation.

A craftsman may need to estimate:

  • thickness;
  • curvature;
  • relief depth;
  • undercutting;
  • hidden attachment points;
  • internal clearances;
  • component dimensions;
  • and the original relationship between decoration and structure.

Photography also introduces uncertainty. Perspective can alter apparent proportions. Reflections can hide engraved lines. Museum lighting can change the perceived colour of patinated metal or lacquer. Previous repairs and centuries of wear may further complicate the reading of the object.

For these reasons, a responsible reconstruction should not claim perfect identity with the original.

It is more accurately described as a historically informed, independently made interpretation.


Research Before Modelling

The first stage of a TangGu historical reconstruction is not production. It is research.

Available references may include:

  • museum collection records;
  • academic publications;
  • auction catalogues;
  • historical photographs;
  • measurements;
  • inscriptions;
  • private collection records;
  • photographs supplied by the owner of an antique object;
  • and comparable works from the same school or period.

The reliability of each source must be considered. A sales description may contain useful information but should not automatically be treated as definitive scholarship. An attribution may be described as “signed by,” “attributed to,” “school of,” or “in the style of,” and these terms should not be used interchangeably.

Dimensions are particularly important. A single known measurement can provide a basis for scaling an image, but photographic distortion must still be considered. Where dimensions are unavailable, proportions may have to be estimated from construction conventions or related historical examples.

This uncertainty is not hidden. It is documented as part of the reconstruction.


Digital Reconstruction as an Interpretive Tool

Once the historical and visual information has been assessed, the design can be developed as a three-dimensional digital model.

This stage is best described broadly as digital reconstruction, because not every object requires the same modelling method.

Geometric components, precise openings and assembly interfaces may benefit from dimension-controlled three-dimensional modelling. Sculptural motifs such as dragons, peacocks, shishi, deities, clouds or flowers may require digital sculpting. Many projects use a combination of both.

The digital model allows the studio to study:

  • overall scale;
  • structural thickness;
  • relief depth;
  • transitions between forms;
  • negative spaces;
  • fit between components;
  • and the relationship between decoration and function.

Digital methods do not eliminate interpretation. They make that interpretation visible and adjustable before metal production begins.

Digital imaging and three-dimensional documentation are also increasingly important within the wider cultural-heritage field. Smithsonian conservation research notes that 3D imaging can extend documentation beyond the limits of two-dimensional photography and may support virtual reconstruction, reduced handling, access, custom supports and physical replication.

TangGu’s standard reconstruction workflow, however, does not depend upon direct scanning of the historical object. Models may instead be independently developed through research, photographic analysis and digital sculpting.


From Digital Model to Metal

A digital model is not the finished artwork.

For many sculptural fittings, it serves as the foundation for a physical master or casting pattern. Lost-wax investment casting can then translate complex three-dimensional forms into metal.

This process is especially useful where the design contains:

  • deep relief;
  • curved surfaces;
  • complex undercuts;
  • sculptural animals or figures;
  • repeated decorative elements;
  • or irregular organic transitions.

Yet casting alone cannot reproduce the sensitivity of finished historical metalwork.

A raw casting commonly requires extensive refinement. Seams must be removed. Forms may need correcting. Fine lines must be restored. Textures have to be sharpened or recreated. Edges must be controlled. Areas intended for polishing, patination or inlay require careful preparation.

The final quality therefore depends heavily on what happens after casting.


The Importance of Hand Chasing and Refinement

Hand finishing is where the metal begins to acquire artistic character.

Depending on the project, this stage may involve:

  • chasing;
  • engraving;
  • carving;
  • filing;
  • scraping;
  • punch work;
  • texturing;
  • surface levelling;
  • polishing;
  • selective highlighting;
  • and preparation for patination.

A cast dragon may contain the general shape of its head, body and scales, but its expression depends upon the refinement of the eyes, mouth, whiskers, claws and transitions between the body and surrounding clouds.

A flower may be present in the casting, yet still lack the crisp edge, surface movement and controlled depth that make it visually convincing.

This is why historical reconstruction cannot be evaluated solely by the sophistication of its digital model. The model, casting and handwork must support one another.

Digital technology provides control and repeatability. Hand craftsmanship restores nuance, variation and life.


Patination Is More Than Colour

Japanese metalwork is often admired for colours that do not resemble ordinary polished metal.

Shakudō may develop a deep blue-black surface. Shibuichi can take on a range of grey tones. Copper alloys may be coloured to produce brown, red or subdued purple effects. Gold and silver details can be contrasted against darker grounds.

Museum records show how historical sword fittings combine metals such as iron, copper, gold, silver, shakudō and shibuichi through high relief, inlay, overlay and patinated surfaces.

Patination is not simply paint applied to the surface. It depends on metal composition, preparation, solution, temperature, timing and finishing. Even when working from photographs, identifying an original metal and its historical colour can be difficult.

A reconstruction may therefore aim for a historically sympathetic visual character without falsely presenting the surface as naturally aged.

TangGu does not seek to disguise newly made work as antique. Any aged or subdued finish should support the design while preserving the identity of the reconstruction as a contemporary piece.


Reconstruction, Reproduction and Restoration

These terms are often confused.

Restoration

Restoration concerns an existing historical object. The aim may be to stabilise, conserve or carefully return part of that original object to an appropriate condition.

TangGu’s historical reconstruction projects are not restorations unless the studio is specifically working on an existing customer-owned object under an agreed conservation scope.

Reproduction

Reproduction generally refers to making another version of an existing design. It can range from inexpensive commercial copies to highly accurate museum-quality objects.

Historical Reconstruction

Historical reconstruction emphasises research, interpretation and newly developed production. It may draw upon incomplete evidence and can require the recreation of undocumented structure, dimensions or artistic details.

A reconstruction remains distinct from the original and should be presented honestly as a modern work.


Why the Original Should Remain Distinct

The purpose of reconstruction is not to erase the difference between old and new.

Historical objects carry qualities that cannot be recreated:

  • their documented provenance;
  • their material age;
  • evidence of historical use;
  • direct association with an artist or owner;
  • original signatures;
  • period repairs;
  • and their place within a particular chain of transmission.

A modern reconstruction can reproduce form, explore technique and communicate artistic language, but it does not inherit the original object’s history.

This distinction protects both the historical work and the integrity of the contemporary craftsman.

A responsible project should therefore avoid:

  • false signatures;
  • fabricated certificates;
  • artificial provenance;
  • claims of museum approval without permission;
  • or descriptions designed to make new work appear antique.

Respect for history requires clarity.


A Case Study: Kujaku Myōō Aikuchi Koshirae

TangGu’s reconstruction of a late Edo-period Kujaku Myōō Aikuchi Koshirae demonstrates how these principles can be applied to a specific historical design.

The reference mounting is associated with the Ishiguro metalworking tradition and combines sculptural peacock imagery, mixed-metal fittings and a richly decorated lacquer saya. Its iconography relates the peacock not merely to natural beauty, but to Kujaku Myōō(孔雀明王), the Peacock Wisdom King of Buddhist tradition.

For the reconstruction, the visible composition had to be interpreted from surviving photographs and published information. Sculptural forms were rebuilt as digital models, translated into metal through casting, and then refined by hand.

The process involved more than reproducing the outline of a bird. It required careful attention to the movement of the plumage, the transition between sculptural fittings and saya, the balance of polished and textured surfaces, and the relationship between the metalwork and the larger composition.

The finished project remains a newly made TangGu reconstruction. It does not claim the authorship, age or provenance of the historical mounting.

Its purpose is to study and continue the craftsmanship embodied by the reference work.


The Role of Museums and Public Collections

Museums are essential to the study of Japanese arms and fittings.

Institutions such as the Tokyo National Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum preserve and publish swords, mountings and individual fittings spanning many historical periods. Tokyo National Museum exhibitions regularly present blades and sword fittings together, while major international collections classify tsuba and other components as significant works of arms, armour and decorative art.

Online collection records have made basic information more accessible, including maker, date, materials, dimensions and provenance. However, public access to an object record does not automatically grant unrestricted commercial use of every photograph, scan or digital model associated with it.

The historical object and the modern documentation of that object may have different legal statuses.

TangGu therefore distinguishes between:

  • a historical design that may be in the public domain;
  • a museum’s modern photography;
  • published catalogue text;
  • proprietary three-dimensional data;
  • trademarks and institutional branding;
  • and authorised or licensed reproductions.

Museum names may be used to identify the location or provenance of a historical work where appropriate, but no affiliation or endorsement should be implied without formal authorisation.


Preserving Technique, Not Only Objects

An object can survive while its making process disappears.

The tools may no longer be commonly used. The alloy may become difficult to source. The original patination sequence may be forgotten. A particular method of undercutting relief or preparing a nanako ground may survive only in the hands of a small number of specialists.

Historical reconstruction helps keep these questions active.

It encourages craftspeople to examine:

  • how historical makers solved technical problems;
  • how artistic subjects were adapted to small surfaces;
  • how form followed the structure of the sword;
  • how metals were combined;
  • and how visual richness was created without sacrificing function.

Not every reconstruction will recover the original process perfectly. That is not always possible.

Its value lies in disciplined investigation, documentation and continued practice.


The Future of Historical Sword-Fitting Reconstruction

The future of historical reconstruction will likely combine increasingly sophisticated digital tools with renewed appreciation for hand craftsmanship.

Three-dimensional archives can preserve information about form. Interactive models can allow collectors and researchers to study objects from angles that are difficult to see in a display case. Digital reconstruction can test proportions and assembly before material is committed. Additive manufacturing can create accurate patterns for complex castings.

But technology cannot replace judgement.

It cannot automatically determine which marks belong to the original artist and which result from wear. It cannot fully interpret religious iconography, school traditions or the expressive decisions of a master metalworker. It cannot replace the touch required to refine a line, balance a surface or judge the final character of a patina.

The strongest reconstruction work therefore does not place digital methods and traditional craftsmanship in opposition.

It brings them together.


History Cannot Be Reproduced—But Craftsmanship Can Continue

A historical masterpiece belongs to its own time.

Its maker, patron, materials, use and provenance cannot be recreated. Yet the knowledge embodied within it can still be studied. Its techniques can still challenge contemporary craftsmen. Its artistic language can still inspire new work.

Historical reconstruction is most meaningful when it approaches the past with humility.

It begins by asking how an object was made, why it was designed in a particular way and what it represented within its original culture.

It then translates that understanding into a new work—clearly contemporary, independently made and respectful of the historical reference.
