Chōkinshi – Fashi(彫金師)
Fashi is a skilled chōkinshi (metal engraver and tsuba artisan), specializing in the creation of iron tsuba with a particular focus on openwork (sukashi) designs. His work encompasses a wide range of traditional forms and stylistic interpretations, reflecting both classical influences and refined craftsmanship.
He is especially adept at crafting sukashi tsuba in various shapes and configurations, with careful attention to balance, negative space, and structural integrity. Traditional elements such as sekigane (責金) are thoughtfully incorporated, enhancing both authenticity and functionality. Each piece is meticulously hand-finished, resulting in a rounded, dense, and solid presence that reflects the strength and character of iron.
Fashi also applies traditional patination techniques to achieve an aged, time-worn appearance, imbuing each tsuba with a sense of history and depth. Among his works, the Musashi Sukashi Iron Tsuba with Sekigane has gained particular recognition and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
