Sword Polisher – Jack Garthwaite(研磨师)

Jack Garthwaite is our collaborating apprentice sword polisher based in Australia, providing restoration and conservation services for Japanese sword enthusiasts across the region.

Training under Martin Hornak in the methods of a togishi (研師), or traditional Japanese sword polisher, Jack is dedicated to the careful preservation and restoration of Japanese blades. His work includes treating damaged, rusted, or otherwise compromised swords, ranging from antique pieces to those of the WWII era and beyond.

With three years of continuous study in sword polishing, complemented by nine years of experience as a blacksmith, Jack brings a well-rounded understanding of blade metallurgy and structure to his craft. A togishi employs a wide range of natural whetstones to gradually restore a blade to an artistic standard—neutralizing or removing rust, preserving original geometry, and revealing the intrinsic features (Hataraki) formed during forging. For unattributed swords, a well-executed polish can also provide valuable insight into the blade’s origin, maker, and stylistic lineage.

Jack believes that a truly refined polish should enhance the sword without overshadowing the original work of the swordsmith, allowing the blade to be appreciated with greater depth and clarity. He works on both modern and antique swords, approaching each piece with respect for its historical context and the traditions of Japanese and Japanese-inspired swordsmithing.
