Tsuba (Sword Guard) “Kagechō”|Hand-Polished Iron Sukashi Tsuba with Shadow Butterfly Motif and Traditional Black Patina Finish
The “Kagechō” (影蝶, Shadow Butterfly) tsuba is a refined iron sukashi tsuba featuring an abstract butterfly motif expressed through elegant openwork forms. Rather than depicting the butterfly in a literal manner, the design captures its fleeting silhouette and graceful movement, evoking the image of a butterfly passing through light and shadow. This understated interpretation reflects the Japanese aesthetic appreciation for suggestion, impermanence, and quiet beauty.
Crafted from iron and meticulously hand-finished, the composition is formed by four flowing openings arranged around the central plate. The balanced asymmetry creates a subtle sense of motion, as if the wings are gently turning in the wind. The openwork construction allows light and shadow to interact across the surface, enhancing the organic rhythm of the design while preserving the strength and functionality of the guard.
The surface is finished using a traditional ni-kuro shiage (煮黒仕上げ) black patination process, imparting a deep, understated sheen to the iron. Fine forging textures remain visible beneath the finish, preserving the natural character of the material while highlighting the quiet elegance of traditional metalwork.
Graceful yet restrained, the Kagechō Iron Sukashi Tsuba embodies transformation, freedom, and ephemeral beauty. Its flowing silhouette and minimalist form make it a timeless expression of Japanese design, equally suited to both classical and contemporary sword mountings.
